What is Beyond 1939?

Beyond 1939: The University of Sydney in the Postwar World is an extensive dynamic database aiming to identify and record the names, service records and biographical data of the university community who served in World War II, at home and abroad.

This database builds on the success and research work of Beyond 1914 – the University of Sydney and the Great War.

The University’s Book of Remembrance 1939-1945, published in 1993 commemorates the 286 men and one woman who died because of the war. An addendum was included to the book in March 1994 of an additional three men who died, bringing the total of deaths to 290.

More than 6500 university men and woman have been identified as having served in some capacity in World War II. It is important to note that Beyond 1939 is not a complete record of names or details of the lives of these men and women. The identification of names is ongoing.
