Sailing privately 8th March, 1916, was commissioned at War Office, London, 3rd June and served with Nos. 4 and 1 1 Reserve Squadrons in 1916; No. 10 Squadron, France, 1916-17; Nos. 17, 38 and 59 Training Squadrons, 1917; No. 62 Squadron, France, 1918; No. 8 Training Squadron, 21st Wing Examining Officer, and No. 2 Group H.Q., 1918-19, returning to Australia via U.S.A. 28th July. Gained Certificate i a at Gosport School of Special Flying; promoted flying-officer, 28th July, 1916; temporary captain and flight-commander, 29th July, 1917; captain, 1st April, 1918. Awarded M.C. and A.F.C. and Mentioned in Despatches twice. A.D.C. to Governor of N.S.W., 1915. Pre-War, A.M.F. : Commission in 26th Infantry. Early education at St. Ignatius' College.
