M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and France. Enlisting in June, 1915, and sailing in July, served till September at No. 1 Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis, and as R.M.O. 14th Battn. in Gallipoli, Egypt and France till December, 1916. Then was Bearer Captain, 4th Australian Field Ambulance, till wounded severely 9th June, 1917, and evacuated to hospital in England, returning privately via Canada to Australia in June, 1918. Promoted major, 24th August, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. * He constantly patrolled the bearer line under very heavy shell fire, maintaining communication between aid posts and dressing stations, and on one occasion he took a squad across the open through an intense barrage to an aid post to relieve a temporary glut of wounded. He was twice wounded, the second time severely, and his gallant conduct was the means of saving many lives.
