Enlisting 7th February, 1916, and sailing 2nd May as corporal, fought with battn. from November, 1916, to August, 1918, being Intelligence Officer from November, 1917. Served at Messines, Passchendaele, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere until demobilisation. Promoted sergeant, January, 1917, second-lieutenant, October, and lieutenant, December. Secretary, The Union. Early education at Merthyr Tydvil County School.
