White backed the regional economic and educational innovations of the 1930s and 1940s: he was a director of the New England and North-West Producers Co. Ltd and was active in the movement to obtain wool-selling facilities at Newcastle; he was also a director of Armidale Newspapers Ltd. He sat on the council of The Armidale School and supported the campaign for a university college at Armidale. From ADB entry

C.M.G., D.S.O., C. de G., Arts and Eng. : Lieutenant-Colonel 36th, 33rd and 35th Battns., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 7th March, 1916, and sailing 1st May as captain, commanding D Coy. 33rd Battn., crossed to France and moved into the Line 22nd November in Armentieres sector, where wounded 8th February, 1917. On recovery rejoined battn. and was in charge of its extreme right flank in Battle of Messines. Promoted lieutenantcolonel, 13th April, 1918, at Villers-Bretonneux and placed in command of 36th Battn. and, on the breaking up of this battn. 30th April, returned to 33rd as C.O., transferring to 35th on 16th June and serving until demobilisation. Made a C.M.G. in 1918; awarded D.S.O.* in 1917, and C. de G. in 1918 and Mentioned in Despatches four times. Early education at The Armidale School. Later at St. Paul's College. * He led his company to the attack with exceptional dash over difficult ground and under heavy gas and shell bombardment. By his great cheerfulness and disregard of personal danger, he kept the morale of his men at its highest, under incessant artillery fire, repulsed a counter-attack and successfully organised the consolidation.
