Book of Remembrance entry

M.C., LL.B., Arts (e) : Major, 13th Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 22nd February, 1915, and sailing 29th September, joined battn. in Egypt in January, 1916, and, crossing to France, fought on the Somme until wounded at Mouquet Farm 29th August. Rejoining battn. in November, was wounded again at Bullecourt n th April and on recovery served at Messines, Polygon Wood, Zonnebeke, Cambrai, Ypres, Hebuterne, Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel, along the Somme to the Hindenburg Line and St. Ouentin, returning in January, 1920. Promoted lieutenant, 7th April, 1916, and captain, 19th August; major, 22nd April, 1918. Awarded M.C.* for work at Mouquet Farm and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Kogarah Superior Public and Sydney High Schools. * He extricated his men from a dangerous position with great courage and initiative. Later, although wounded, he organised and led his men, refusing to leave until the action was over.
