Arts II (e) : Captain, 30th, and 8th Trng. Battns., A.I.F., Egypt, France and England. Enlisting 12th July, 1915, and sailing as second-lieutenant 16th February, 1916, was seconded in Egypt from 8th Training Battn. to Cyclists 28th May and, crossing to England, returned to 8th in France in August. Joined 30th Battn. at Armentieres 28th September and served on the Somme until August, 1917, then returning to Training Battn. Rejoining 30th Battn. in November, fought at Messines and the Somme, being continuously in line, till invalided to hospital from Corbie 18th May, 1918. Appointed Education Officer, 30th Battn. and 8th Brigade, 1st December, and to 5th Division, 5th March, 1919, returning in January, 1920. Promoted lieutenant, 25th November, 1916; captain, 1st October, 1917. Early education at Maitland and Sydney High Schools. Later at Teachers' College.
