M.C., Med. II : Lieutenant, 59th Battn., and A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 23rd February, 1915, and sailing with 5th Australian Field Ambulance 25th June, was at Anzac from August until the Evacuation. Promoted sergeant, 9th January, 1916, in Egypt and, transferring to 15th A.F.Amb. 24th February, crossed to France and remained with it until 31st March, 1917. Then joining 59th Battn., passed through Officers Cadet Battn. at Cambridge and, rejoining 59th as second-lieutenant 31st August, fought with it at Ypres, Passchendaele, Messines and Villers-Bretonneux, where wounded 8th August, 1918. Rejoining battn. 20th October, served until demobilisation. Promoted lieutenant, 21st January, 1918. Awarded M.C.* for work at Ypres and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at King's College, Goulburn, and Sydney Church of England Grammar School. * For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in taking out a daylight patrol over a distance of 600 yards and definitely locating the enemy line. He cleared a ' pill-box ' containing ten of the enemy, capturing five, killing three and wounding two. Then, coming under heavy fire, he succeeded in bringing his patrol through with only one casualty and rendered a useful intelligence report.
