Book of Remembrance entry
D.S.O., M.C., B.E. : Captain, 29th Squadron, R.F.C., B.E.F., France. Enlisting 8th September, 1915, and sailing as second-lieutenant n th March, 1916, with 4th Reinforcements 30th Battn., crossed to France via Egypt with 46th Battn. Volunteering for R.F.C., crossed to England, became second-lieutenant 23rd October and was promoted flying-officer, 15th March, 1917, and captain (flight-leader), 15th July. Returning to France, served brilliantly for two and a half months till death. Awarded D.S.O.* and M.C. and Mentioned in Despatches twice. Killed in Action, near Zantvoorde, 20th July, 1917, while going straight for twelve Germans . Commemorated in Arras Memorial. Early education at Sydney High School. * Though surrounded by enemy machines, he continued to fight for nearly an hour with the utmost gallantry and determination against two hostile formations, finally bringing down one of the enemy out of control. Within a month he brought down seven hostile machines, completely out of control,,” — London Gazette, 17th September, 1917.
