Sewell, Leonard Greville

Book of Remembrance entry

M.C., B.E., A.M.I.E.Aust. : Captain, 1st Machine Gun Coy., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 24th May, 1915, and sailing as second-lieutenant 30th September with 9th Reinforcements 2nd Battn., joined battn. 14th February, 1916, at Tel-el-Kebir. Transferring to 1st M.G. Coy. on formation 12th March and immediately crossing to France to Fleurbaix sector, fought at Pozieres, Mouquet Farm, Ypres and Flers, where wounded 9th November. In 1917 was in Advance to Hindenburg Line, at Bullecourt and, transferring to 21st Coy. 5th July, at Ypres III, Passchendaele and Zonnebeke, where wounded 31st October. Rejoining 1st Coy. early in 1918, was at Strazeele and elsewhere until invalided to hospital in England, being at Salisbury Depot at the Armistice and demobilised in United Kingdom. Promoted lieutenant, 26th April, 1916; captain, 5th July, 1917. Awarded M.C. 3rd June, 1916, and Mentioned in Despatches. University Medallist. Early education at Brisbane Grammar and Sydney High and Grammar Schools.
