Book of Remembrance entry
A.F.C., Eng.; Major, R.A.F. and R.N.A.S., B.E.F., France; also A.N. and M.E.F., New Guinea. Enlisting 15th August, 1914, served with A.N. and M.E.F. till 4th March, 1915. Sailing privately via U.S.A., joined R.N.A.S. in England as sub-lieutenant 26th July and crossed to France as warpilot, later becoming test and experimental pilot on Isle of Grain, England. Was picked up unconscious from the wing of a hydroplane by a minesweeper in the English Channel and also wounded while flying in France, 1916-17. In 1918 served in R.A.F. at Martlesham Heath and Experiment Station, Grain. Promoted flight-lieutenant, 1st October, 1916; flight-commander, 30th June, 1917, and squadroncommander, 31st December; major, R.A.F., 1st April, 1918. Permanent command (major and squadron leader) as Engineer and Technical Adviser, R.A.F., England, including seven months in India, 1919-26. Deputy Director, Aeronautical Inspection, R.A.A.F., 1926-28. Pre-War : Built and flew aeroplane in New Zealand. Early education at Brooksby Preparatory, Double Bay, and The King's Schools.
