M.C., B.A., LL.B. : Lieutenant, 3rd Battn. A.I.F., France. Enlisting 12th January, 1915, was commissioned in November and sailing 15th January, 1916, with 14th Reinforcements, crossed from Egypt to France in March and was temporarily assistant Q.M. to Battn. and later to 1st Division at Base. Served at the Somme, Ypres, Meteren, Strazeele and elsewhere until demobilisation, although invalided to hospital in February and May, 1917. Awarded M.C.* for work at Gutzer Farm, Strazeele. Early education at Newington College (Dux). * During a heavy attack on his position, the enemy gained a footing in a farm on high ground and were causing casualties by enfilade fire. He at once rallied his platoon and led a brilliant charge on the house, driving the enemy out and killing forty. He showed fine courage and by his prompt action he saved a very critical situation.
