D.S.O., M.C., School of Engineering Workshop : Lieutenant- Colonel, 45th, 46th, 48th and 13th Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Enlisting 20th November, 1914, as second-lieutenant and sailing with 13th Battn. 22nd December, was with battn. at Gallipoli from the Landing until wounded 7th August, 1915, at Arghyl Dere. Transferring to 45th Battn. at Tel-el-Kebir 3rd March, 1916, and crossing to France in June, was wounded in Pozieres sector 14th August and rejoining battn. on recovery, remained with it till 6th July, 1917, when sent to Senior Officers School, Aldershot. Again rejoining battn., 1st October, transferred to 46th on 8th, remaining with it till 12th April, 1918, when returned to 45th. Joined 48th Battn. 1st June and wounded a third time in Villers-Bretonneux sector 8th August and on recovery detached to 4th Army Gas School 2nd September, serving until demobilisation. Promoted captain, 12th March, 1916, and major, 25th August; temporary lieutenant-colonel, 16th October, 19 17; lieutenant-colonel, 1st June, 1918. Awarded D.S.O.* and Mentioned in Despatches four times. Early education at Sydney High School. * Though wounded he refused to leave, and successfully commanded and controlled the capture of the final objective, afterwards directing consolidation, and placing the line in a defensive condition.
