L J Pellew showed an ability early on in his medical career to develop sound surgical techniques.His flair for diagnosis and his surgical acumen earned him a Mention in Despatches for his work in the field of war. After returning from World War I, L J Pellew conducted a busy surgical practice in Adelaide as well as undertaking many duties with public bodies and charitable institutions. He spent a year overseas in USA and UK to devote himself to post-graduate surgical studies as well as spending time in Japan and S.E. Asia. After returning to Adelaide, L J Pellew was made the Official Surgeon to the S.A. Fire Brigade.
