Nott had set up and manned a soup-and-sandwich kitchen in Canberra's Causeway area during the Depression. His interests were varied: he was involved in Legacy, the Returned Sailors', Soldiers' and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia, the Canberra Repertory Society, the Canberra Philharmonic Society and the Horticultural Society of Canberra.From ADB entry

L.R.C.P. & S. (Edin.), L.R.F.P.S. (Glas.), Med. I l l : Captain, Royal Scots, B.E.F., France; also R.A.M.C., England. Enlisting at Edinburgh, 7th August, 1914, in Scots Greys, was drafted to A Squadron, Lovat's Scouts, serving till May, 1915, when commissioned In the Field to Royal Horse Artillery, 1st Glamorgans. In October transferred to Royal Scots as captain and adjutant, serving till 1917, although wounded on the Somme in 1916. Appointed M.O. Norfolk War Hospital in 1918 and in 1919 to Pilkington Special Orthopaedic Hospital, St. Helen's, Lancs., later returning to Australia after severe illness. Mentioned in Despatches twice. Early education at Maryborough (Q.) Grammar School. Later at Ballarat School of Mines.
