M.C., LL.B. : Captain, 45th and 13th Battns., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting 14th June, 1915, and sailing 9th August with reinforcements, joined 13th Battn. at Lemnos in October and served on Gallipoli till the Evacuation with promotion to non-commissioned officer. Transferring to 45th on formation in Egypt 3rd March, 1916, was appointed warrant officer and, crossing to France in June, fought till wounded near Corbie 6th August, 1918, and evacuated to hospital. Rejoining battn. on recovery, served until demobilisation. Promoted second-lieutenant On the Field , 8th February, 1917, and lieutenant, 21st June; captain, 2nd May, 1919. Awarded M.C. on the Somme in 1918.Early education at Unanderra Public School.
