Active in the Militia from 1935, he was promoted temporary lieutenant colonel in 1940 and given command of the 25th Battalion, Darling Downs Regiment. He spent the next three years administering army training establishments in Queensland (as temporary colonel from August 1941). FROM ADB entry

Book of Remembrance entry

B.A., B.Sc.Agr., Diploma in Military Science : Captain, Sea Transport Service and A.A.V.C., A.I.F., France. Seconded from University Scouts to camps and, being medically unfit for full Active Service, was allowed to enlist for Transport Service 31st May, 1916. Was appointed captain for the voyage only , sailed as Adjutant on Kyarra 3rd June and was later Adjutant on Ayrshire , returning in February, 1917. Re-enlisting as private in Veterinary Details 26th November, served until after the Armistice, although sick at 5th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, Mauberge in November, 1918. Later, under A.I.F. Education Scheme, won National Diploma in Dairying (Scotland).Resident at St John's College, Sydney University.
