D.S.O., M.C., M.B. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, France and England. Enlisting and sailing in March, 1916, joined 14th Australian Field Ambulance in Egypt 16th April, became R.M.O. 54th Battn. on 20th and crossed with it to France in June, serving at Fleurbaix, the Somme and elsewhere. Transferring to A.I.F. H.Q. 29th May, 1917, was appointed D.A.D.M.S. 1st Anzac Corps 6th August, being wounded near Albert 25th September and evacuated to hospital. On recovery went to No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 21st February, 1918, and, returning to France to 10th A.F.Amb. 31st March, was severely wounded at an advanced dressing station 24th April. Promoted major, 29th January, 1917. Awarded D.S.O.* in 1918 and M.C. 1st January, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches. Died of Wounds, Vignacourt, 25th April, 1918, and was buried in Vignacourt British Cemetery. Early education at The King's School. Later at St. Paul's College. * In a village under heavy bombardment of gas and high explosives, this officer, with practically no protection, tended the wounded for four and a half hours. When the advanced dressing station had been moved to a new site, he remained with four men evacuating odd cases which continued to come in until two shells came right into the dressing room, severely wounding him. His cheerfulness and coolness throughout encouraged all his men.
