Book of Remembrance entry
D.S.O., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting 26th July, 1915, and sailing on 31st, joined A.I.F. H.Q., London, on arrival and County of London War Hospital, Epsom, soon after. Crossing to No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 31st December, 1916, transferred to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, being R.M.O. 17th Battn. from 26th January, 1917, to March, 1918. Then returning to ambulance, remained with it until invalided to England in September and on recovery served at Orthopaedic Hospital, Southampton, until demobilisation. Promoted major, July, 1917. Awarded D.S.O.* at Passchendaele in October, 1917, and invested at Buckingham Palace 13th December, 1918. Mentioned in Despatches twice. Early education at King's College, Goulburn. * For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, tending the wounded continuously for ten hours under shell fire. Several of his bearers were killed and wounded and it was only with the greatest difficulty that he was able to save the wounded from being killed or buried alive.
