Book of Remembrance entry
Kt., O.B.E., B.Sc., B .E .; D.Sc. (Adel.), F.R.S.,: Hon. Major, Special List, War Office. Upon return from U.S.A. in June, 1915, offered services to Defence Department and again in January, 1916, and finally while arranging to join Engineer Officers Training School at Moore Park, was advised by Brigadier-General Foster to proceed direct to the War Office. Upon arrival in London was referred to the Ministry of Munitions in June, 1916, appointed temporarily to the Explosives Department, and in July Liaison Officer to the Russian Government Committee to supervise shipment of explosives and chemicals going to Russia, with rank of Hon. Captain, War Office Embarkation Staff. In March, 1917, became special Intelligence Officer and upon the Bolshevik Revolution putting Russia out of the military sphere, transferred in January, 1918, to the British Section of the Commission Internationale de Ravitaillement as Chief of the Explosives Section with rank of Hon. Major (Special List). Served there till 23rd February, 1919, when its work was practically complete, and returned to Australia in April. King's Polar Medal and two Bars. Member of Staff, Shackleton Expedition, 1907-08. Leader of Antarctic Expeditions, 19 11- 14 and 1929-31. R.G.S. Medals : Antarctic, 1909; Founders, 1915. Professor of Geology, Adelaide University.
