C.M.G., D.S.O., C. de G., B.E. : Colonel, C.R.E., Australian Corps, and 1st Division; and 2nd Field Coy., Engineers, A.I.F., Gallipoli, France and England. Enlisting 31st August, 1914, and sailing 21st October, served from the Landing at Anzac until evacuated to Egypt 14th September, being Acting C.O. 1st Divisional Engineers from 15th May. Returning to Anzac 19th November as lieutenant-colonel and C.O., remained there until the Evacuation. Crossing to France 22nd March, 1916, continued as C.R.E., taking part in all actions, including Pozieres and Passchendaele, until 4th April, 1918, when transferred to England to command Engineers Training Depot at Brightlingsea. Returning to France as C.R.E. Australian Corps Troops 5th July, took part in Great Advance of 8th August and on 17th November was appointed Chief Engineer, Australian Corps, serving until demobilisation. Promoted major, 17th September, 1914; temporary lieutenant-colonel, 26th July and lieutenant-colonel, 19th November, 1915; temporary colonel, 17th November, 1918. Made a C.M.G. in 1918, awarded D.S.O. 14th January, 1916, and Croix de Guerre avec palme and Mentioned in Despatches five times. Member S.U. Scouts, 1903-07. R.A. Engineers, 1908-14. Base Commandant, W.A. (Brigadier), A.M.F., 1931-35. Early education at The Armidale School.
