M.C., Eng. II : Captain, 56th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli and France. Enlisting in May, 1915, and sailing with 12th A.L.H. Regt. n th June, was commissioned and transferred to 4th Battn. 8th December and to 56th in February, 1916, taking part in the Desert March . Crossing to France 29th June, fought at Fromelles, Somme, Flers, Gueudecourt and elsewhere till wounded at Louveral 2nd April, 1917. On return from hospital in England served at Polygon Wood, Westhoek, Broodeseinde Ridge, Messines, Villers-Bretonneux, the Grand Offensive of Fourth Army, Proyart, Peronne, where wounded 2nd September, 1918, and till demobilisation, returning as Adjutant, troopship Lancashire . Promoted lieutenant, 10th March, 1916, and captain On the Field , 6th June. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Peter Nicol Russell Scholar. Educated at Greenwich Public and Fort St. High Schools. Later at Sydney Technical College. * He led his company through heavy artillery and machine gun fire almost to Peronne ramparts where he established a defensive position. At great personal risk he then went out to locate the flanks of two other battalions and successfully linked up with them.
