Book of Remembrance entry

D.S.O., M.C., M.B., Ch.M. : Major, 20th Battn., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Enlisting in March, 1915, and sailing 26th June as second-lieutenant 20th Battn., fought at Gallipoli from August until the Evacuation, being A.D.C. to Brigadier-General W. Holmes in December. From January to June, 1916, was with 5th Infantry Brigade, in the desert east of Ismailia until March and in France as Lewis Gun and Intelligence Officer. Then was attached to 2nd Division H.Q. and on liaison and reconnaissance work at Pozieres, being General Staff Officer III from 3rd October at the Maze (Flers), the German Retreat and Lagnicourt. Appointed Brigade Major 6th September, serving at Westhoek, Broodseinde, Villers-Bretonneux and elsewhere and in July, 1918, was attached to 65th American Inf. Bde. H.O. to assist in staff work, but was with Division from Villers-Bretonneux till 30th December, when returned to complete University course. Slightly gassed at Villers-Bretonneux in June, 1918, and slightly wounded at Harbonnieres in August. Promoted lieutenant, 26th August, 1915; captain, 15th July, 1916; major, 1st August, 1918; and appointed G.S.O. II in November. Awarded M.C. in June, 1917, and D.S.O. in January, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches thrice. Early education at Sydney Grammar School. Later at St. Andrew's College with two years in Arts.
