Book of Remembrance entry

M.C., B.A., B.Litt. (Oxon.), Arts II : Lieutenant, 2nd Machine Gun Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting 20th July, 1916, and sailing 2nd May with 2nd Reinforcements 5th M.G. Coy., served with battn. until sent to Officers Training School, in England, from September to December, 1917, and gazetted second-lieutenant. Returning to France in March, 1918, fought till wounded at Hamel 4th July and invalided to England and Australia, arriving in December. Promoted lieutenant, 26th July, 1918. Awarded M.C.* for work at Hamel. Rhodes Scholar, 1918, and Wood Prizeman. Early education at Sydney High School (Captain). Later at New College, Oxford. * Though early wounded, he brought his two guns forward to a good position, and continued to do good work with them until obliged by his wound to hand over and go to a regimental post.
