Enlisting 9th March, 1915, and sailing 8th October as secondlieutenant in charge of 10th Reinforcements 1st Battn., crossed to France in March, 1916, and served at Pozieres, Somme, Hindenburg Line, Bullecourt and Ypres. Was Assistant Provost Marshal 4th Division from November, 1917, to April, 1919, and C.O. Provost Corps from October, 1919, to May, 1920, returning as O.C. troopship Kigoma 18th July. Promoted captain, 1st January, 1917; major, 1st January, 1918. Awarded M.C. at Hamel 4th July, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Petersham Intermediate High School.
