Book of Remembrance entry
M.C., M.B. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, England and France. Enlisting in May, 1915, and sailing in July, served with No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Cairo, and as R.M.O. 56th Battn. and 5th Training Battn., Zeitoun, from 15th February, 1916, crossing with it to France and serving at Fleurbaix and the Somme. On 6th October joined 14th Australian Field Ambulance, being with it till 3rd February, 1917, when appointed C.O. 5th and 6th Australian Sanitary Sections and was staff officer, A.D.M.S., Salisbury Plain, from 8th July. Returning to France in 1918 as M.O., 33rd Casualty Clearing Station, was attached to R.A.M.C. and crossing again to England in November, became M.O., No. 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, Harefield, until demobilisation, returning as S.M.O. hospital carrier "Morvada ". Promoted major, 24th August, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at Sydney High School. * "Owing to the condition of the front line trenches he was compelled to carry on his work among the wounded in the open. Under very heavy shell-fire he showed the greatest courage and coolness. Though joined later by other medical officers, he stuck to his work without rest or sleep."—London Gazette, 26th September, 1916.
