A member of the Linnean Society from 1908, he came to be an authority on Australian insects, specialising in disaese-carrying flies. junior demonstrator in pathology in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney in 1911. In 1923 he was elected President of the Royal Zoological Society of NSW and President of the Linnean Society in 1926. [Rallying the troops]

M.B., Ch.M., D.P.H. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England. France and Palestine. Enlisting and sailing in August, 1915, with No. 10 Australian General Hospital, joined No. 1 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 13th June, 1916, on No. 10 being disbanded. Crossing thence to No. 3 A.G.H., Abbeville, 24th June, remained there till 20th August, 1918, when transferred to Anzac Field Laboratory, Palestine, and, joining No. 14 A.G.H., Port Said, 6th March, 1919, served until demobilisation. Promoted major, 12th October, 1917. Early education at Mr. James Oliver''s School, Glebe Point.
