Evans, Wilfred

M.C., M.B., M.R.C.P., F.R.A.C.P. : Major, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine. Enlisting in May, 1915, and sailing in June, was at No. 1 Australian General Hospital, Heliopolis, until September, after a short period as R.M.O. Reinforcements. Then was R.M.O. 9th A.L.H. Regt. for eleven months, including the Evacuation of Gallipoli, Sinai Desert and Battle of Romani. Joining 3rd A.L.H. Field Ambulance 1st September, 1916, served with it and Camel Transport Corps at Canal Defences, Magdaba, Rafa and Gaza I and II. Was attached to H.Q. Australian Mounted Division for short periods, D.A.D.M.S. from 3rd August, 1917, to 16th May, 1918, and later with 4th A.L.H.F.Amb. and No. 14 A.G.H., Port Said. Was present at the Capture of Jerusalem, 2nd Raid on Es Salt and Amman and the final attack on Damascus, being Chief M.O. after its capture. Returned as M.O. troopship "^Eneas "2nd January, 1919, appointment terminating 5th April. Awarded M.C.* 18th December, 1917, and Mentioned in Despatches four times. University Medallist. Early education at The Scots College. Later one year in Arts. * At Battle of Gaza II "He worked all day under the fire of the guns, and, assisted only by four men, handled no less than 240 wounded."—Official History of Australia in the Great War.
