Book of Remembrance entry

M.C. and Bar, B.Sc.Agr. : Captain, 54th and 2nd, and 1st Training Battns., and 12th A.L.H. Regt., A.I.F., Gallipoli, France and England. Enlisting 19th March, 1915, and sailing 12th June as Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant 12th A.L.H. Regt., served at Gallipoli from August till the Evacuation, being commissioned in 2nd Battn., 19th November. Promoted lieutenant and transferred to 54th on 1st March, 1916, serving in France from June till wounded at Fromelles 20th July, evacuated to hospital and on recovery posted to 1st Training Battn. in England. Rejoining battn. 29th June, 1917, served at Polygon Wood and Wytschaete, where wounded 18th November. Later was at Villers-Bretonneux, Peronne and elsewhere till demobilisation. Promoted captain, 1st October, 1917. Awarded M.C.* and Barf and Mentioned in Despatches. Early education at St. Joseph's College. Later at St. John''s, with two years in Arts. * "When in charge of machine guns his fine work materially assisted in repelling two enemy counter-attacks, and at dawn he effectively covered the right flank."— London Gazette, 26th September, 1916. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations of 1st and 2nd September, 1918, near Peronne. Leading the first wave of attack, he immediately dealt with repeated attacks on our line. He methodically withdrew platoons and supporting companies when no longer required . . . throughout the operations he showed marked courage and ability to command."—London Gazette, n th February, 1919.
