B .E .: Lieutenant, 56th and 4th Battns., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and France. Sailing in September, 1914, as wireless operator on transport Suffolk , obtained transfer on arrival at Alexandria to 4th Battn. at Cairo, Enlisting in December. Temporarily transferred to Egyptian Military Wireless Service and was present at first Turkish attack on Canal, but crossed with battn. to Gallipoli in March, 1915, and served throughout this campaign except for two short periods in hospital at Alexandria and Mudros. On return to Egypt transferred to 56th Battn. on formation, as second-lieutenant and, crossing to France in June, 1916, was Battn. Intelligence and Scout Officer till wounded at Fromelles 21st July and evacuated to hospital and to Australia. After March, 1917, was for some time on Military Censorship Staff, 2nd District (N.S.W.). Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School.
