Thought to be a a member of Sydney University Scouts dates unsure, 1906 received the inaugural Best SGT in the Regt Award(an engraved silver whistle and 10 guineas). The award became known as the Croll Whistle and is still awarded annually in SUR to the best NCO in the regt.

C.B.E., V.D., M.B. : Colonel, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Egypt, Gallipoli and Palestine. Enlisting 12th October, 1914, and sailing 15th December as second in command 2nd A.L.H. Field Ambulance, went with it to Egypt and Gallipoli, becoming Acting C.O. 15th May and serving until the Evacuation. On 1st January, 1916, was appointed to command Ambulance, serving with it through Sinai and Palestine until 20th June, 1917, when transferred as O.C. to Camel F.Amb. Was A.D.M.S. A. and N.Z. Mounted Division, from 23rd August, 1917, to 31st October, 1918, and D.D.M.S., A.I.F., Egypt, from 28th March, 1919, to 16th July. Promoted lieutenant-colonel, 1st January, 1916; temp, colonel, 23rd August, 1917; colonel, 26th April, 1918. Made a C.B.E. 3rd June, 1919, and Mentioned in Despatches twice. A.M.F. : P.M.O., 1st Military District, Queensland, 1914. Hon. Consultant, Hospital for Sick Children, Brisbane. Early education at Fort St. Model School.
