Buchanan, August Lyle

V.D., M.B., Ch.M., F.R.C.S., F.R.C.S. (Edin.), F.R.A.C.S. : Lieutenant-Colonel, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., Gallipoli, Egypt, England and France. Enlisting 4th August, 1914, was appointed R.M.O. 1st Field Artillery Brigade and, sailing 14th October, became Bearer Captain 3rd Australian Field Ambulance in February, 1915, serving at the Anzac Landing and until invalided to Egypt in October. On recovery was O.C. Base Depot Medical Stores, Cairo, till August, when transferred to England and subsequently appointed D.A.D.M.S., A.I.F. Depots in United Kingdom. Crossing to France in May, 1918, as Section Commander 5th A.F. Amb., was transferred as O.C. to No. 2 Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall. After Anzac Leave in England, took a post-graduate surgical course at Middlesex Hospital, returning in 1920. Promoted major, February, 1916; lieutenantcolonel, 2nd May, 1918. Mentioned in Despatches twice. Tutor in Surgery. Demonstrator in Anatomy, 1921. Early education at Sydney High School.
