James was 19 (5’10”, grey eyes, fair hair, Presbyterian) when he enlisted (no. 3698, 30th battalion) at Holdsworthy on 20 Sept 1915. Son of Ludovic Blackwood, joined the Uni Scouts. He embarked on Medic on 30 Dec 1915, went to France with field ambulance. Septic foot. Gun shot wound to left arm July 1916. Briefly in English hospital before being returned to action. Penalised for AWL Sept 1916. Died from gunshot wound to right leg 2 December 1916. Buried in cemetery attached to hospital Heilly France.

Arts I : Private, 2nd Battn., A.I.F., France. Enlisting in September, 1915, and sailing soon after with 12th Reinforcements, joined battn. in Egypt. Crossing to France in March, 1916, fought at Fleurbaix, where wounded, and, rejoining battn., served again on the Somme till death. Killed in Action, the Somme, 2nd December, 1916, and buried in Heilly Station Cemetery. Early education at Sydney Church of England Grammar School.
