D.S.O., M.P.S., Pharmacy : Lieutenant-Colonel, 3rd Machine Gun Battn., A.I.F., France. Entering Liverpool Camp in 1915, was Staff Officer for musketry training until 1st March, 1916, when appointed to command D Coy. 36th Battn. and, sailing in April, arrived at Armentieres in November. In March, 1917, transferred to 35th Battn. as second in command, being in command for the attack on Messines and later serving at Ypres. On 15th March, 1918, appointed to command 3rd Machine Gun Battn., remaining with it until demobilisation. Promoted major, 1st May, 1916, lieutenant-colonel, 15th March, 1918. Awarded D.S.O. 3rd June, 1918, and Mentioned in Despatches twice. 1st Regt. N.S.W. 1898-1902 (private—corporal). A.M.F. : 29th Infantry N.S.W.—commissioned 1908, captain 1913. Early education at Bagdad State and The Hutchins Schools, Tasmania. Later at Sydney Technical College.
