D.S.O., V.D., B.A., Law III : Colonel, 30th and 32nd Battns., A.I.F., Egypt and France; also Major, A.N. and M.E.F., New Guinea. Enlisting and sailing in August, 1914, as major, was in command of garrison troops at Rabaul from 10th January, 1915, and returned in March. Enlisting in A.I.F. 5th August and sailing as a company commander, 30th Battn., served in Egypt and Sinai. Crossing to France with battn., was wounded at Fromelles 19th July, transferred to command 32nd Battn. on 28th, when promoted lieutenant-colonel and served with it until 9th May, 1917. Then was appointed to command No. 5 Australian Divisional Base Depot, being transferred to A.I.F. Depots in United Kingdom 7th January, 1918, and was later Staff Officer for Demobilisation, retiring with rank of colonel Awarded D.S.O.* for work at Fromelles and Mentioned in Despatches. Second-lieutenant, 2nd Infantry Regt., 1895. A.M.F. : Adjutant and later Area Officer. Early education at Sydney High School. * Though wounded early in the engagement, he proceeded, without waiting to have his wounds dressed, to organize his company as a working party and supervised the work for about ten hours.—London Gazette. 26th September, 1916.
